Talisman Films Scotland member Bill Gourlay is one of the founder members of Kirkcaldy Cine Club,
formed in 1960 with another four cine enthusiasts,they had premises in Nether Street
Kirkcaldy. Bill bought his first cine camera in 1963 and over the years has built up
a considerable archive of film covering the redevelopment of Kirkcaldy and Dunfermline.
When he moved to Dunfermline in 1978 he joined Dunfermline Cine Club and had some success
in the various competitions, in the Dunfermline and Edinburgh clubs. In 1982 he teamed up
with Marianne and Gordon Ellis to form Talisman Films, whose
first film "Dunfermline Opera House 1903--1983" was very successful, winning awards
in both Dunfermline and Edinburgh Cine Clubs.
A change of direction
from documentary to drama gave the group some more success with " Now and Then, " shot at various
locations such as Loch Fitty, The Pancake Place Kirkcaldy, and the Canmore Bar Dunfermline the pub
is now demolished, "but that had nothing to do with us!! " says Bill. The group made quite a few
films over the next twenty years or so, all shot on Super 8 film. In 1999 Bill bought his first video camera;
the other members having changed over as well, mainly due to the high cost of cine film and the fact
that Kodak had stopped producing sound film.
Bill is now the secretary of Talisman Films Scotland.
