Forth Road Bridge

This film documents the changes in the Forth Road Bridge from its construction up to the present day.

From Ferries to Forty

North Queensferry

North Tower under construction
North Tower early in construction,
only up to first set of diagonal bracing
men fixing cable onto pulley wheel, this wheel would then travel across the river to its opposite station pulling a continuous steel tendon, thus building up the many strands that made the massive cables that supported the bridge deck, known as cable spinning

Shot from the ferry, the bridge deck nears completion
Both main towers are well under way, the cables and deck could only commence once the towers were completed
One of the first cars to pay the tolls – note the fee ‘two and six’
dramatic illustration of the bridge construction, showing the relationship of the cable and deck in the design.
South Queensferry near anchorage, these colossal cables are built up by numerous river crossings of the large pulley wheel, each time pulling another strand. The cable end is anchored into an immense footing set into the ground, this construction itself representing a major engineering feat.
modern shot giving an impression of the size of the bridge anchorage, a number of the Talisman crew are in the foreground
Modern view of the underside of the bridge as viewed from the North shore
not for the faint-hearted - a view from the cross member at the top of the south tower, even on a calm day the wind speed is quite fast at this height.
south side tolls, by this stage the south bound booths had been removed. A modern plaza was then constructed for a short period before the abolition of the tolls made these redundant
